Trading Options as a Long-Term Investment Strategy

Trading Options as a Long-Term Investment Strategy

Posted on 01. Jul, 2010 by in Options

There are many who consider option trading to be a high-risk stock market strategy.  That’s understandable.  Many people jump into trading options with dreams of making a fast buck and getting rich quick by day trading options.  They read a few articles on trading options or maybe attend a seminar and think they can apply the same strategies they use for trading stocks to trading options.  Sadly, many who do this end up losing substantial money in the market by jumping in before they’re ready.

What went wrong?  Let’s face it; trading stock options is different from trading stocks.  After a person realizes this, steps can then be taken formulate an options trading strategy that is low-risk that can be optimized for long-term portfolio growth.  Trading options has really gotten a bad rap that may not be deserved.  This happened because many of the people who jumped in before they were ready and lost money went on to tell others that options were a bad deal.

It doesn’t have to be like this.  If one takes the time to learn about options and practice options trading strategies, most people would agree that although options are different, they can be used as a long-term trading strategy.

But where do you start if you want to learn how to trade options?  Obviously, you’re not going to learn all you need from this brief article.  The first step is to read through a good book on trading options.  There are many good ones to choose from but one that consistently ranks as a five star book on Amazon is “Options for the Beginner and Beyond: Unlock the Opportunities and Minimize the Risks,” by W. Edward Olmstead.

Another thing you might want to consider is purchasing a good option trading software package.  There are many to choose from but one of the better ones, which has been ranked six times as the best option trading software by Stocks & Commodities Magazine, is Optionvue.  Optionvue is a powerful software package that allows you to identify and test winning strategies and select good trades that have good profit potential with lower risk.

Finally, you’ve probably heard it before but it’s definitely worth repeating: practice, practice, practice!  Before you put any real money into trading options, practice trading for awhile to see if you’re ready.  Once you open an account with an online brokerage company, most of the best these days have a feature that lets you “pretend” trade for awhile.  Typically, you don’t even have to fund your trading account to use this feature.

Practice trading allows you to pick a stock or option for a particular company and try out a strategy on it in real time, just as though it was the real thing.  The great thing about practice trading is that you don’t have any of your own money at risk.  Practice trading is highly recommended for a period of time before you commit any real money to trading options.

Do you think options trading would be viewed much differently today if many of those who previously experimented with it took the time to learn and practice before they jumped in with real money?
